Description From Owner:
- Pop. 9,945. Part of the City of Cambridge, Reg. Mun. of Waterloo, on the Speed R. and Hwy 24, 10 km N of Galt and 14 km S of Guelph.
- The community started when Abram Clemens, a United Empire Loyalist from Pennsylvania, bought land in the area. By 1830 Michael Bergey had built a sawmill and foundry, and the place was known as Bergeyville.
- In 1851 the post office was established as New Hope, but in 1858 the name was changed to Hespeler after the town's leading citizen, Jacob Hespeler. Hespeler, originally from Baden-Baden, Germany, moved to New Hope from nearby Preston in 1845.
- He built a grist and flour mill, a distillery, and a wool mill and was the first postmaster and first reeve.
