- Pop. 838. Part of Muskoka Lakes T., Dist. Mun. of Muskoka, on the Indian R., which connects lakes Muskoka and Rosseau and Hwy 118, 28 km NW of Bracebridge.
- Michael and Alexander Bailey settled in 1865, after the Free Grant Colonization Rd. was opened from Washago, through Muskoka, to Parry Sound in 1858. The settlement was first known as Indian Village.
- Benjamin Hardcastle Johnston was appointed postmaster in 1868. When he was asked to name the settlement he honoured Sir John Carling, MP for London and Ontario's first minister of public works, who was visiting at the time on a fishing trip.
