Description From Owner:
- Pop. 93,819. Town in Reg. Mun. of York, on Hwys 404 & 407, 16 km. N of Toronto. Balser Munshaw was the first settler, in 1794, but did not stay; nor did the next two settlers, John and Edward Stooks.
- In 1797, William B. Peters came into possession of the Munshaw lands, and settled. In 1799, about 40 exiled French royalists led by Joseph Genevieve, Comte de Puisaye, attempted to form a settlement in uncleared townships along Yonge St.
- The noblemen and their servants could not adapt to the rigours of pioneer life, and by 1806 most had returned to Europe. Abner Miles arrived between 1798 and 1802 and built a mill, after which the community was named Miles' Mills.
- The place was later known as Mount Pleasant. In 1819 the settlement was named after Charles Lennox, fourth Duke of Richmond.
- In 1931 the widow and son of David Alexander Dunlap built the David Dunlap Observatory in Richmond Hill and presented it to the University of Toronto.
- Dunlap was a financier and philanthropist, who bankrolled the Timmins brothers in the LaRose silver mine at Cobalt and the giant gold strike in Timmins.
