Ontario Tourism Region : Greater Toronto Area

Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 485,204. On L. Ontario, one of the five cities and one borough that comprise the Mun. of Metropolitan Toronto, which covers 400 square km. (154.4 sq. mi).
  • The area was surveyed by Augustus Jones in 1791. Because of the majesty of the 90-metre-high clay bluffs, Jones called the area The High Lands of Toronto and named the township Glasgow.
  • Two years later, Elizabeth, the wife Lt.-Gov. John Graves Simcoe saw the 9-km.-long cliffs from a boat. She talked building a summer residence here and calling it Scarborough after the town with great grey cliffs in Yorkshire, England.
  • Scottish stone mason David Thomson from Dumfriesshire is believed to have been the first resident of Scarborough. He built a log cabin on the banks of Highland Cr. near the site of what is now Scarborough General Hospital.
  • Thomson's job was in York, now Toronto, but he made the long treks home because he wanted a healthy place to raise his family, away from the marshy lands of Toronto.
