Pop. 731. In Sheffield T., Lennox and Addington Cs., on the Salmon R. and C. Rds. 4 & 15,62 km NW of Kingston.
The community was first called Wheeler's Mills after early settler Calvin Wheeler, who moved from Vermont around 1840.
. In 1841 Wheeler built a sawmill and a grist mill, which encouraged settlement, mainly by immigrants fleeing the Irish potato famine.
In 1848 the post office was established with Wheeler as postmaster, and he named the community Tamworth after a place in Staffordshire, England.
